What persuaded you to work for Bank of America Merrill Lynch?

I was looking for the best bank in public finance and that was Bank of America Merrill Lynch—the No. 1 bank for a couple of years based on the volume of deals done in that space.

What does a typical day look like for you?

As a public finance banker, I’m responsible for helping governments and public entities raise money to help finance capital projects.

On a typical day, I can be participating in the structuring of a live deal, researching potential deals, putting together pitch books or responding to requests for proposals. I also research in detail our client’s outstanding debt histories and put together summaries for the managing directors in my group.

One of the most interesting deals I’ve worked on was structuring a bond deal for the city of Orlando so that they can build a new major league soccer stadium.

Knowing that the firm has invested its time in me and cares about my performance going forward, not just when I started, means a lot to me.

What are the most important things you’ve learned since joining?

One of the most important things I’ve learned since I’ve started work is the importance of attention to detail. Whether structuring a deal or putting together a presentation, if you’re off by one fraction of a percentage, it can mean the difference between hundreds or millions of dollars. The most important skills and attributes that you need to be a public finance banker are attention to detail and dedication.

What’s the training and development like since you started?

It’s constant! Because of the steep learning curve, having ongoing training is helpful, and it’s important to learn the basics and make sure you’re not forgetting the most important aspects of the job. Knowing that the firm has invested its time in me and cares about my performance going forward, not just when I started, means a lot to me.

How would you describe the culture at Bank of America Merrill Lynch?

I would say the culture is diverse. I think that they care about the success of the individuals, not just people who fit a particular profile.

What would you want people to know?

I think it’s important to know that working at Bank of America Merrill Lynch allows you to be part of a family. Everybody cares about your success and well-being and wants you to grow.
