What does a typical day look like for you?

As you probably have heard, we never have a typical day in the trading floor! Every day brings a new challenge and excitement which continually attracts me to my job.

At the office, I write about the key market movements overnight and highlight any interesting observations internally within the desk and externally to our clients. As a commodity trader, I also pay attention to news in the physical market apart from the financial market. All of these would then culminate into trade ideas and fruitful discussions with clients.

For the rest of the day, I evaluate my risk positions and plan how to manage them based on my market view. I also make market for clients, and my current role requires me to look at linear and non-linear derivatives, as well as indices, structured products and exotics. I spend the rest of my time doing analyses and building models/scripts.

How do you describe the culture at the bank?

Bank of America has a flat hierarchy and strong culture of collaboration. Juniors interact with senior management very often and are encouraged to provide their input. Even as a junior on the team, I am actively involved in strategic discussions and given the opportunity to handle key projects. We collaborate across seniorities, desks and business units, as well as geographical regions. It is very common to hop on a call with a colleague from another desk or another office to have discussions. Many times I have experienced connecting with a fellow employee for the first time over the phone, and yet receive a generous amount of help and advice. This is especially beneficial as I can leverage the bank’s global resources and network to grow my career.

In one word, how would you describe Bank of America?

Empowering.

Having a global presence also means we have opportunities to speak with clients around the world.

Do you work in a global team?

Without a doubt. This is one of the key advantages to working in a global bank and I have benefitted tremendously from it. Markets are interconnected across time zones and asset classes, giving me opportunities to work with colleagues outside of my desk regularly. For example, I have daily calls with my London and New York colleagues to discuss market views and provide insights on Asia market moves and liquidity. Besides, a major move in another asset class could very well have ripple effects to the product I trade, and very often I interact with colleagues from another desk or country to better understand the big picture. Having a global presence also means we have opportunities to speak with clients around the world.

I have also travelled overseas to my meet colleagues and clients, which augmented my exposure and perspectives. Apart from visiting the offices in New York, London and Hong Kong, I have also represented my firm in an international conference held in Barcelona.

These experiences allow me to maximize our global resources, increase my international exposure, and see the entire business more holistically.

What advice would you give to students?

Keep an open mind. Many students may have done prior internships or attachments, and become very fixated on what they want to do in future. While it is important to leverage previous experiences, students should not let it define their career path. Get exposure to various business areas, either through personal research, hands-on projects or by speaking to different desk managers. Be mindful of other significant factors that often determine the success of one’s career. Mentorship is key and look out for someone who is willing to teach you the ropes and nurture you, be in a spot where you see ample growth opportunities and very importantly find a place where you are empowered.
