How do you describe the culture at the bank?

Very collaborative and open-minded. Teams work closely together to deliver a complete solution, and everyone is encouraged to think up innovative ideas and put them into practice.

 

What does a typical day look like for you?

I spend part of my morning learning about the latest developments and best design practice that can be applied to our project. After that, I focus on the deliverables for the week. These are usually a mix of different development items focused on new feature build-outs.

Once the tasks are in good shape, I focus on improving existing code base and planning for our next major deliverable. I’ll also allocate time to review other developers’ code and offer improvement suggestions.

I usually end my day by connecting with my colleagues in the UK and U.S. We typically update each other on co-dependent tasks and discuss possible solutions to the coding problems we are facing.

What skills are important for a developer role

Knowledge of underlying technology stack, confident and fact-based communication, attention to detail, and a willingness to continuously learn and improve.

Seeing first-hand how the solution you build is improving the experience of your users.

 

What advice would you give to students?

Ask many questions in your interviews. The opportunities within technology are very diverse and it’s important to understand what your potential job entails and how well it aligns with your career goals.
