How would you describe your job to a friend?

I’m a trader in the Emerging Markets South Asia Rates team, focusing on Interest Rate Swaps (IRS) and Bonds. Every day, my primary job is to help our Asia Rates franchise in market making for the clients who request prices. Bank of America Merrill Lynch is a client-focused franchise and adding value to our clients is very important to us. Trading is very entrepreneurial and it’s a combination of being constantly involved in making decisions in dynamically moving markets and interested in developing a bigger picture of how you can grow the business as a client franchise – understanding needs of the clients and coming up with ideas to help their business.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Every day is different. I enjoy trading in Emerging Markets— its more dynamic and being relatively less mature compared to Developed Markets, each EM country product has its own unique idiosyncrasies to learn. For a junior trader like me, this provides opportunity to observe, learn and gain experience.

I have always dreamt of having a job where “I wake up in the morning and I feel excited to go to work”. As a trader this dream is coming true. Every day is challenging and provides me plenty of opportunities to do something new and develop professionally.

How does the bank support your development?

The learning curve for me after joining the firm has been very steep and the bank provides the opportunities and environment to ensure I am supported. I love the culture on the floor, my colleagues always look out for me and take out time to help me learn and grow. I am very impressed with the relatively flat organizational structure and the enormous decision-making responsibility that comes even when you are a junior member of the team.

What advice would you give to students?

There's no pre-defined formula on what makes an intern successful to convert the opportunity to to a full-time role. A positive can-do attitude, likeable personality, attention to detail, helpful character, curious mind, being reliable at work and understanding the business context (bigger picture) of the work are the key qualities that I believe are crucial for our job, especially when starting in your career.
