What persuaded you to work for Bank of America Merrill Lynch?

I joined Bank of America Merrill Lynch because of BofAML’s reputation on Wall Street as a top tier global investment bank. I wanted to learn from the best and the brightest and the bank is filled with people who have spent years delivering for their clients. Moreover, BofAML’s capacity to lend, underwrite and advise make it unique in the industry. BofAML is not simply a bank or an investment bank, it’s both! Clients have come to value that comprehensive coverage.

How do you describe the culture at the bank?

BofAML’s culture is collegiate. My team works incredibly hard at coming up with solutions for our clients needs but makes time for fun too. My group created FIG Feast where coverage bankers and product bankers across the sector eat dinner together once a week. It has become a tradition that we look forward to and it even serves as an opportunity for us to share advice with one another. Separately, BofAML promotes affinity groups where employees who share a common characteristic or passion can work together to drive an initiative. Whether you are interested in the environment, engaged in civic duties or are active culturally, there’s a way to connect to other like minded people.

What skills are important for an associate in the Financial Institutions Group?

Accounting skills are core to understanding and analyzing financial statements. Financial Institution Analysis is unique and differs from Corporate Analysis so having a strong comprehension of accounting and financial statements is critical. In addition to quantitative skills, communication skills are a close second. It’s not uncommon for an associate to communicate directly with a client or a member of Senior Internal Management when working on a transaction so his or her ability to communicate effectively is very important. We handle sensitive, non-public material everyday, and with that comes a lot of responsibility.

What advice would you give to students?

Don’t be intimidated if your major is not finance related. I’m often taken back by how many students are hesitant to apply for a role at the bank because they haven’t taken finance courses in school. Not only are the Liberal Arts essential to a well rounded education but are valued when prospective candidates join our team. We also have a world class training program that will teach you what you need to know. The training program is thorough and is administered during the summer. Accounting, modeling, team building and community service are mandatory elements of the program and by the time you start, you’ll be ready to get to work!

What do you like most about your job?

Helping our clients. There’s nothing more satisfying than working on a transaction that allows our clients to better service their customers.
