Explain your typical day.

We follow the stock markets. We know where the market is moving and we try to explain what traders are doing at the desk — what they’re earning and products they’re trading. At the end of the day, we try to verify that the P&L is correct.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your role?

On a daily basis we receive a lot of queries from different people, and that stretches you to think more and to learn more. This is an interesting part of my job. New challenges stretch you to go beyond what you think you can do, to put on your thinking cap and find creative ways to resolve problems.

What kind of training have you received?

There are many resources you can rely on. Firstly, there’s an online portal we can use to improve our product knowledge and other skills, and there’ll be classes provided by senior management to improve our soft skills and presentation skills. Your manager will work with you on a regular basis to share what you are doing well, what you can improve on and will recommend courses for you to attend.

What are the key skills to do well at Bank of America Merrill Lynch?

First of all, you have to come in with an open mind and have what we call a 'can do' attitude. I think it also helps to be inquisitive. Over time you might perform the same function again and again, and you might think that this is it, but if you don’t think in terms of how you can improve the process, how you can bring more value to what you are doing, then, you might not find your job interesting anymore. But in our job there is always room for improvement in many areas that you can work on. This is really up to the individual, to have an inquisitive mind.
