Vanessa Vyvial

Analyst, Global Research

What persuaded you to work for Bank of America?

I started my career at BofA as an intern and was converted after the 10 week program. During my internship, I became fascinated with the role of an equity research analyst. I loved the idea of becoming a specialist in a specific sector and advising clients on it. I also enjoyed being surrounded by some of the brightest people in the industry. Ultimately the fast-paced, intellectual and challenging environment of research felt like a good fit for me and my career goals.

What does a typical day look like for you?

I always start the day by reading the news and keeping myself informed on what’s happening globally (both in finance and geopolitics) and in my sector (transport related news). Other than that, day-to-day tasks are rather fluid – I could be updating financial models, collating data and analyzing it, answering client requests, speaking to our coverage companies as well as writing reports.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Every day on the job is different – it’s hard to expect what the day will bring since our job is highly versatile and ever-evolving based on current affairs and geopolitics. The unpredictability of it can make it demanding but it is also highly rewarding when you get a stock call right or you create meaningful research that clients comment on.

The fast-paced, intellectual and challenging environment of research felt like a good fit for me and my career goals.

What do you enjoy doing in your personal time?

I love being active - preferably being in the outdoors, playing tennis, practicing yoga, going on a run, skiing or hiking. I also love reading a good fiction novel!

What is your biggest accomplishment or achievement at Bank of America?

My biggest accomplishment would be that my hard work during my internship days paid off and that I was converted to full time. Another accomplishment would be that I didn’t study finance in university so closing the gap between myself and my finance major peers. It’s an on-going process but every year it feels like that gap is narrowing.

What advice would you give to students?

Be proactive and take initiative. And if you really set your mind to a goal, you can accomplish it.
